Mold testing is often misunderstood, especially when it comes to the purpose and limitations of different sampling methods. Air sampling and surface sampling are the two most common tools used during a mold investigation, but they answer very different questions. Knowing how each works—and when each is appropriate—is essential for interpreting results correctly.
Air sampling measures the concentration and types of mold spores present in the air at a specific moment in time. Samples are typically collected using a calibrated air pump that pulls a known volume of air across a collection medium. The results are then analyzed by a laboratory to identify spore types and approximate concentrations.
Air samples are best used as a comparative tool. They are most meaningful when indoor samples are compared to outdoor samples collected at the same time. Because outdoor air naturally contains mold spores, indoor air results must be evaluated in context. Elevated indoor levels, unusual species, or patterns inconsistent with outdoor air can suggest an indoor source of growth.
However, air sampling has limitations. Mold spore levels fluctuate constantly based on activity, airflow, humidity, and weather conditions. A clean air sample does not guarantee the absence of mold, just as a high count does not automatically confirm a problem. Air sampling reflects conditions at the moment of collection, not long-term exposure.
Surface sampling serves a different purpose. It is used to determine whether a specific substance on a surface is mold and, if so, what type. Surface samples may be collected using tape lifts, swabs, or bulk material samples. These methods allow laboratories to identify actual growth rather than airborne spores.
Surface sampling is particularly useful when visible discoloration is present and confirmation is needed. It can also help distinguish mold growth from non-biological staining, dust, or debris. Unlike air sampling, surface sampling does not provide information about airborne exposure or overall indoor air quality.
One common mistake is assuming that one method is better than the other. In reality, they are complementary tools. Air sampling can help assess the broader indoor environment, while surface sampling provides localized confirmation. Neither method alone tells the full story.
